Conference: Invited Workshops

Phoenix B | Dossie Easton

Workshops: Phoenix B

Bio: Phoenix B, Seattle Washington.

Phoenix’s “official” entrance into the Seattle BDSM community was by joining the local SM Dyke club, Outer Limits in 1986. From there Phoenix quickly went on to become a coordinator in that organization until it closed in the mid-90's. Phoenix is the co-founder/producer of the well-known and highly-regarded Wicked Womyn SM conference in Seattle. Phoenix also served as a coordinator for the several PowerSurge Conferences in the 1990’s as well. Phoenix has taught many workshops across the USA, Europe, and Canada for over 20 years on play piercing, cutting, suturing, fire play, blood drawing, flogging, and Japanese rope harness. Phoenix also loves “hooks” and has facilitated many energy pulls and suspensions.

Some of the events Phoenix has served include Women at Leather Pride - Amsterdam, Schmacht! - Berlin, SM Dykes - Manchester England, Dark Odyssey - Baltimore, Black Beat – Baltimore, Lesbian Sex Mafia - New York, Thunder In The Mountains - Denver, Southwest Leather Conference – Phoenix, Pacific Friction – Portland WA, Mayhem – Vancouver Canada, Southern Bash – Atlanta, Beyond Leather – Ft. Lauderdale, and in Seattle: Wicked Womyn, PowerSurge, Seattle Women of Leather, Center for Sex Positive Culture (the Wetspot), C-Space, Kinky Carnival, and the Blood Faire.

Phoenix believes it is important to share knowledge about SM techniques but also to listen and learn from others as well. Phoenix has many interests, but motorcycle riding and service bois are some favorites. Phoenix identifies as Two-Spirit Native (Cree First Nations/Scots), Gender Queer, Top, Sir, and Daddy, and has a particular fondness for having boots shined. (You can view Phoenix’s profile on under the name PhoenixB)

Advanced Decorative Cutting

This workshop will cover how to make intricate cuttings even if you have little or no artistic talent. Phoenix will discuss the technical aspects of intricate decorative cutting such as: where to find and create detailed designs, what are some of the design issues to be aware, what are the transfer materials and equipment needed and where do you obtain them, what are the design placement concerns, how do you “shade” areas to create a complex design, what types of handles and blades are used and where do you obtain them, what are the cross contamination and blood borne pathogen prevention techniques, and what are the tricks of the trade to do intricate cutting. There will be a review of safety requirements for general cutting/blood play. Participants will also view a video showing cutting techniques. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge, experience, and questions around cutting techniques and other design ideas.

Class Level: Intermediate-Advanced, but all are welcome
Class Format: Lecture. Depending on the availability of a cutting bottom, this class can be a hands-on class.
Class Requirements: If you are squeamish around blood, then this class is not for you.
Class Objective: Knowledge about selecting designs and ability to apply cutting transfers. With a demo bottom, there will be hands-on practice.

Advanced S/M Health and Safety (for those that think they know it all)

What do you do for an accidental needle stick? How do you clean and disinfect your medical toys? What are some of the appropriate cleaning materials for skin, equipment, sex toys, etc? What are your chances of contracting HIV or hepatitis? What do you do if you’ve been exposed to a blood borne pathogen? What kinds of things can a bottom look for to assure their own safety against contracting an infection?

Whether you are an experienced player or a beginner, top or bottom, you WILL learn something new in this class that will help you play safer. This class is an opportunity to become aware of the potential hazards and learn safety guidelines for dungeon and private S/M play. We will cover risk reduction techniques, blood borne pathogen awareness and concerns, STD’s-STI’s, HIV, and proper glove use in SM. Phoenix looks to professionals in the medical field for current cross-contamination reduction practices and will link those practices to our S/M activities to help create safe kinky play. Participants are encouraged to bring their expertise and/or their questions to this discussion.

Class Level: All levels
Class Format: Interactive lecture.
Class Requirements: None
Class Objective: Ability to recognize health & safety concerns and provide appropriate prevention techniques in kinky play.

Workshops: Dossie Easton

Dossie Easton, a long time player on the San Francisco S/M scene and well-known killer bottom, is co-author with Janet Hardy of The Ethical Slut, The New Bottoming Book and The New Topping Book, When Someone You Love Is Kinky, a book designed to give to outsiders to inform them about our lifestyle, and Radical Ecstasy: SM Journeys to Transcendence. The second edition of The Ethical Slut was released in April of 2009, bigger and better and entirely sluttier. Dossie is a licensed psychotherapist working with individuals, couples and more in her private practice, with a particular interest in how SM journeys into Shadow can bring old wounds into the healing light of consciousness and and give them a shot of life force in the form of good hot sex.

An active sex radical since 1961, Dossie was a member of the first Board of Directors of the Society of Janus in San Francisco in 1974. In the eighties under the name of Hidebound Leatherware, she had a business crafting whips and restraints. Currently she makes her home in the mountains north of San Francisco, travels around to teach at conferences all over the world, and spends her nonexistent free time hiking the hills declaiming filthy poetry to the vultures and hosting outrageous pajama parties. You can check out her website at

Dungeon opening ceremony.

Participants are invited to bring a toy to be blessed at the altar of the Goddess, and to offer prayers for blessings they would like to have bestowed on this toy and on their play over this weekend. Participants are encouraged to state their prayers explicitly enough that, should the Goddess decide to inspire another participant to fulfill a prayer, that participant will know what to do.

We will gather in a circle and together raise energy to fuel our wishes and desires, and to start the sacred energies of Love and Lust flowing through us as we celebrate Her Rites of Ecstasy.

And have fun.

Dossie Easton

Ethical Slut co-author Dossie Easton leads exercises on communicating about and working with whatever that complex of emotions is for you that you call jealousy. You can safely move into ownership of your jealousy while you learn to take care of yourself in a kindly and loving manner at any time when you might feel jealous. You can immediately apply these skills and become free to fully enjoy this conference in a community of lovers in which everyone can get their needs met and no one gets done wrong.

In this workshop you'll practice the dynamics behind erotic journeys into transcendence and how to make them happen using Tantric techniques for building and sharing sexual energy. You'll learn how simple techniques such as breath, sensation, and ritual can expand your concept of gender roles, help you transcend fears of intimacy, and enable you to build and share enormous amounts of sexual and spiritual energy and power. You'll learn how to combine the heart-filled, spiritually energizing techniques of Tantra with the intense stimulation and heightened awareness of SM and you'll have the opportunity to find the blend you like best. Participation will be easy and non-genital, somewhat kinky and almost non-threatening.

N.B. This and the following workshops are suitable both for those who are already on a path of spiritual practice and for the severely left-brained. There is no dogma, only experience that all of us are capable of. The only thing you need to believe is your own experience.

Please wear clothing you can breathe in and bring a mat to sit on and a firm small pillow or zafu. No late admittance.

An exploration of Eros, power and relationships. All our relationships involve an exchange of power. Some of these exchanges are subtle and unconscious, others are intentional and consensual. In this participatory workshop we'll explore elements and styles of power exchange.

We'll work in pairs using techniques borrowed from Tantra and BDSM, including blindfolds and rope harnesses. As we experiment with consciously polarizing and uniting opposites, we'll learn how to avoid the traps of falling into assumptions and disappointments about the roles varyingly (and often confusingly) referred to as yin/yang, dominant/submissive, top/bottom, butch/femme, male/female. You'll learn how to create your own personalized style of power sharing and discover how the conscious, intentional use of active and receptive energies can amp up the energy in any Tantric ritual or BDSM scene.

Please bring a 25-foot length of 3/8 " or 1/2 " nylon or cotton rope (or whatever you personally use to create a chest harness) and a blindfold. More rope is always welcome, bring some to share if you have a lot.

Note: You are encouraged to bring a partner to this class. That partner can be a lover, a friend, or someone you just met at lunch or in the dungeon. Solo attendees will be paired with each other, with consent of course. All exercises can be done physically close or not touching at all. All genders and sexual preferences welcome.

Dossie Easton

Dossie Easton, author of Radical Ecstasy: SM Journeys to Transcendence, will teach a variety of methods of exploring ecstatic states of consciousness through intense sensation and pain.

Some bottoms can ride pain as if it were a wave, full of joy, laughing and giggling, flying on a magic journey with their tops, possibly screaming and writhing but obviously loving it. Ever wonder how they do it? This workshop will demonstrate that there is as much skill and art in bottoming as there is in topping. We will look at breathing, body tension, ways of receiving pain, ways of delivering it, timing, pacing rhythm and all the other tools that tops and bottoms employ to travel with pain to amazing destinations. Participants will get the chance to explore a shared breath and some painful sensations, giving and receiving, with due regards for consent and boundaries.

All exercises will be suitable for any level of experience and any pain tolerance - no one will be asked to do anything beyond what they want to do.
